This week, I used iMovie and the YouTube capture app to create a short trailer for a movie we will be creating later in the semester. I picked the topic of time management, since its something that even I struggle with as a college student. I know that many students, no matter the age level, sometimes feel like they're being burdened with school work and studying and extracurricular activities. The fun part was making deadlines and time seem like some kind of monster in a horror film, because we so often feel that way. Our bodies respond to the stress of deadlines and failure in a similar way to when we are scared. Because in our world, failure is a scary thing sometimes. The title of the movie was inspired by a teacher I used to work with when I was a paraeducator, who always told her students "Time is your enemy."
I enjoyed making this iMovie trailer, and again am amazed at how much versatility the iPad has. If I were to make another trailer, I would perhaps recruit friends or my nieces and nephews to help me film some small scenes. But I think when we make the actual movie I will want to have more than simply static pictures. In my future classroom, I think I could incorporate this into creating short "nature documentaries," in the style of David Attenborough. It would be fun to see all the research and shots students would get of various wildlife.
