Using the Canva website from my PC, I created this info-graphic highlighting some of the problems facing women specifically in STEM careers. Most people know there is a huge gender gap in STEM careers, as shown in the poster only 25% of STEM careers are held by women. This is a huge disadvantage as most of these careers tend to pay more and lead to a better quality of life. They are also higher in demand, and more STEM jobs are being created every day. I chose this topic because it is something very close to me, I am enrolled in a dual-degree program to obtain both a biology and secondary education degree. I plan on teaching, but I like the opportunity that I will have to go to grad school for something biology related, or carry on in a STEM field if I so choose. I also want to inspire my future female biology students to pursue a path in a STEM career, in hopes to narrow the gender gap.
We have used Canva for a project before and I really like the application. I found it easier to use on my PC, but I think that's simply because I am more familiar with my PC than the iPad. I didn't pay a cent to make this poster, but there are elements you can purchase from Canva. However, why do that when you can still make a great info-graphic for free? I can see how this will be very useful in a classroom, maybe for something more content specific like cellular respiration (a favorite topic of mine) or cell division.
